Colonize is a causal video game developed as part of a research project on human learning. We are only interested in using this game to learn more about how humans make decisions and learn new skills. We have no interest in collecting personal information, nor in providing that information to third parties. Any contact information you provide (such as an email address) will only be used to provide you with account information (i.e. password recovery). Any information that you provide which might potentially be used to identify you, in real life, will not be made public, nor provided to a third party. Such information will also not be used in our research project (user names, Facebook ids, email addresses, etc. are never used in our analyses). The information below gives more specific information about our research study.
Purpose of the experiment: This study investigates how people learn new behaviors (such as mastering the actions in a standard video game).
What you will do in this experiment: You will play a two-dimensional causal game based on John Conway’s Game of Life.
Time required: Each stage in the game can be completed in 10-25 minutes by most individuals. To complete the entire game would take most people more than 2 hours. You are encouraged to play only for as long as you are interested in the game.
Benefits: You will receive no direct benefits, beyond your enjoyment (hopefully!) of the game. We do hope that this work tells us more about how people learn to perform behaviors. Risks: The experiment involves playing a video game. There are no known risks associated with playing games of these types.
Confidentiality: All data you provide will be strictly confidential. Any personal information you provide will never be made public nor provided to third parties.
Participation and withdrawal: Your participation in this experiment is completely voluntary. Should you decide to withdraw by exiting the game, any responses you have provided up to that point will be retained.
Financial disclosure: The researchers who developed this video game receive profits from the plays (and any in-game purchases made) of this game. Those profits are used to support future research, and to pay for video game design. If you are interested in using this game for basic research, please contact Neil Schmitzer-Torbert to arrange for access to a noncommercial version of the game.
